Why Our Programs Are Vital
In many countries in Africa, national doctors are assuming leadership
roles in hospitals that were primarily staffed by missionary doctors.
It is difficult for doctors to provide quality care to their patients
and to remain in these hospitals for a number of reasons.
- These new doctors are given sole responsibility for operating a busy hospital shortly
after graduation from medical school without previous medical
experience.
- They are overburdened with extraordinary heavy patient loads.
- They cannot consult specialist colleagues or the latest medical
literature.
- They are geographically distant from access to opportunities for
specialization.
- They are unable to satisfy their professional desire and need for
continuing medical education.

Our programs offer educational opportunities for national physicians and offer you opportunities to serve.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Taught by U.S. Volunteer Physicians and African National
Physicians
DOCS organizes several 10-14 day CME trips each year and hosts CME seminars, mostly in rural locations.
These seminars expose physicians to high quality, regionally relevant instruction with a credentialed faculty, and provides
the opportunity for encouragement through interaction with their peers. | Academic Director Dr.

Residency Program
DOCS provides university credentialed residency training for physicians serving in
areas of Africa where it has not been possible for them to specialize.
Residents enrolled in the program are taught and supervised by national physicians, however there is an urgent
need to supplement the local teaching staff with visiting board certified specialists.
Research / Publication
DOCS provides national physicians access to information resources for learning and research,
and provides training in research and publication. |
